Farid Al-Din Mas,ud Ganj-i-Shakar, Baba Sheikh Farid is the founder of Chishti order of Sufism, in Northern Hindustan ( Pakistan at present). Baba Farid is called ” Saint of the saints”, and is direct spiritual descendant of Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaz of Ajmer Sharif.
Baba Farid, Born in Multan’s village on April 4, 1179, is leading Chishti Sufi who had following in the order. His teacher was Sheikh Qutb uddin Bakhtiar Kaki and his student was Nizam Uddin Olia; look at the caliber of all the three, ” Like teacher, like student” saying goes right.
The great Arab Traveller, Ibn i Batoota quoted his meeting with Sheikh Farid in his travelogues. Baba was also the spiritual leader of Delhi Sultanate. Guru Nanak Dev, The founder of Sikhism, was also inspired from Baba Farid, and quoted him in his Ashloks.
Baba Farid was departed on May 7, 1266 and his shrine is located in Pakpattan City of Punjab Province Pakistan. He was an influential figure in Chishti Order and mentored students & followers like Nizamuddin Olia, Khawaj amir Khusro and Salim Chishti. His Kalam or poetry is also considered as the pioneering work in Sufi Poetry & thought, which later inspired many followers like Shah Hussain, Waris Shah, Bulhey Shah and Sultan Bahoo.
